Playstation Magazine 16 Silent Hill demo
Report filed by nur_ein_tier Feb 9th, 2012

This is the earliest demo that was readily available to the public (not counting things like the beta versions, press discs, etc), so it’s the closest thing anybody probably has to the beta version. There’s a lot of unfinished stuff hidden in the files, and some things were changed. There are misspellings like “Elementaly School,” and some minor changes to the script. There are a lot of notes written on things in Japanese, and I have no idea what any of it says. I’m guessing it’s just notes about what’s going on in the picture or on the game. My favorite is the naked ladies! That was obviously removed from later versions…

I was originally going to make a comparison post of all demo versions, but owing to the large number of images and changes, the whole thing would be a mess. So this is just the first in a series of posts on various SH1 demo versions, which I will then arrange so you can go between them from one overview page. I will also be making videos and more screencaps. These things interest me because I like to see what has changed over time. There’s still a few things I need to add to this page.

The PSM16 menu screen.
Controls.
Even the Konami logo is different.

Later versions of the demo looked like this.
Different colors in the options menu.

Things changed in the game:

How you feel? =0D
She got Harry!

Stanley and Pullman Streets, Midwich “Elementaly,” and Old Silent Hill was called “Wrightwood.”

The Knife was a “petty knife.”

Here’s the same thing in the final version.
Basement stairs blocked off.
This is the screen that showed when you finished the “Scene 1″ level. The level ends when you try to leave the cafe.
After you finish the school level, you see this screen. You end the level by trying to use the lobby key on the lobby door to get out of the school

Files ripped from the disc.

No idea what it says, since I can’t read Japanese. =0)

There were images like this of every possible combination, obviously before they finished the images.
Obviously just a placeholder, but amusing nonetheless.
Game over screen. This isn’t actually used when you die, it just shows the normal text reading “Game Over.”
Another unfinished image.
Showing where the water goes.
.
This is also likely a placeholder.
I think someone said this says “fog” or something.
I’m not sure, but I think that’s a crude drawing of Harry and the lizard monster.
A different view of one of the bodies, could be the one in the bathroom stall, not sure.
A render of Alessa in the files.
Different loading screen. You can’t save or load in the demo, so I don’t know if it’s really intended to be used in-game, or if it’s just a placeholder.

I was going to make videos, but I see that Gyromancy already did, so I will put those instead:

  1. The one pic with the flowers in the BG is the “this game contains violent and disturbing images” warning. I think the flowers makes it kind of funny though XD

  2. A follower of mine on Twitter (@YoshioKun13) could get the words “This game” and “Groutesque” from the image provided in the website section (here: http://alchemillahospital.net/wp-content/uploads/2012/02/WKS_0004.jpg)

His actual comment was: I am unable to read all of that. “This game………caseen(?)……….grotesque…….”

Just thought that might be of some interest to you. I think it might be the warning about how the game contains disturbing and violent images at the beginning of the game.

  3. Second comment regarding the image, but he has confirmed that it is the warning screen.

“Yes, I just watched the startup screen for the Japanese version of SH1 and it is indeed the game’s warning in Japanese.”

  4. Thanks for that.

I still need to go through and upload a few more. All the textures are uploaded into the the modding section, if anyone wants to peruse the bmp files at their leisure, though.

  5. Nice recopilation Amy, if u need help with something in particular, just tell me.. ;)

Curious to know what is written on this picture

  6. Thanks Gyromancy.

I am just trying to do different demos, differences between them and with the final versions.

I don’t know about that picture, but I will try to find out.
